A contemporary landscape painter working in the tradition of the Group of Seven, Marc Grandbois of L’Anse Saint-Jean in Quebec offers his vision of personal expression through the beauties of nature. Whether from a subject painted outdoors or from a photograph, students are led to better transpose his or her emotions into a painted image. Students will gain a better understanding of the subjective power of colours and gesture in painting.

This two day workshop is suitable for intermediate to advanced painters. While Marc works with acrylic, he is open to all mediums. A two-hour en plein air demonstration occurs in the morning. If there is inclement weather, then the demonstration takes place indoors at the Chapel Gallery. During the demonstration, students observe and listen to Marc while he paints. After lunch, students work with their own materials and take instruction from Marc. At the end of the second day, a 90-minute group critique takes place.

This workshop equips you with a sensible two-step approach for any subject done in oil or acrylic, by first having you build a solid “underpainting” foundation upon which to apply colour. The under-painting resolves issues strictly of drawing, composition and “value”- clearly enough to struggle with all at one time! With these “structural” components settled and in place, the under-painting serves as a “blueprint” or template whereby the painter is now free to focus entirely on colour (and perhaps brushwork and edges). Here basic colour harmony strategies and paint application techniques (scumbling, wet in wet etc..) will be demonstrated. Participants work on a winter landscape exercise because winter (with light and shadow patterns) simplifies by reducing detail and can thereby teach us to see all painting subjects properly: as a small number of big pieces or main values.
