Throughout the year, we host a variety of workshops that inspire and encourage people to explore their own creativity. The workshops are fun, informative and educational.

Cancellation Policies

No refunds are issued to students who cancel after the registration deadline has passed. A full refund is issued should Muskoka Arts & Crafts cancel the workshop. Should inclement weather result in the cancellation of all or part of a workshop, students will be called a day in advance or a minimum of three hours prior to the workshop. The timing of the notification depends on the day and time of the workshop. Any workshop cancelled due to weather, will be rescheduled as soon a possible. 

 

Stepping Outside the Box: Exploring Pen & Ink with Colour Wash

A wonderful explorative workshop suitable for all levels and emphasizing creative growth. Some sketching skills and a brief discussion about composition will be covered at the beginning, then right into sketching, adding ink(s) and a splash of colour. You will be working at the lovely Woodchester Villa, located beside the Chapel Gallery and use that as the main focus for sketching. It is an exceptional octagonal shaped building that will offer inspiration for this workshop.If weather permits, students will be en plein air or else working inside. For the more advanced artist, step out of your comfort zone, whether it be by trying photo realism, minimalism, pointillism or wonky architecture.

Upcycling your old, abandoned accessories into fresh new pieces is a wonderful way to make new and distinct jewellery projects. From those gaudy clip-on earrings from the 1980s collecting dust in the bottom of your jewellery box, to inherited pieces or costume jewellery you don’t wear, old accessories can be given new life and new use with just a small dose of creativity.  

You will learn how to revamp and combine pieces to bring new life to them and create something you will be proud to wear. You can expect to make one to two pieces during the workshop and learn skills to make more at home.

Do you want to be artistically loose and playful? Well come and experience an alcohol painting class with Maureen Rieckhof. The colours are vibrant and there are numerous possibilities for adventure and exploration. You will learn how to use alcohol ink on Yupo paper and tiles, which you will take home with you.

Creative Writing & Sphere Poem

Do you love to write? Is something holding you back? Are you a writer or visual artist in need of some inspiration and rejuvenation? Would you love to bring more joy and creativity into your moments? If your answer is yes to one or more of these questions, then consider yourself warmly invited to this exploratory workshop engaging word, image and small-scale sculpture. Center your minds, heart and hands and see where it takes you. Word-play and creative cross-training exercises will enliven your creativity and open you up to the stories that are there just waiting for you. Selecting words from your writing creations, you’ll incorporate them into a “sphere-poem.”  It’s intended as a sculptural celebration of your creative journey as well as an inspiring talisman you can take home with you and turn to again and again when in need of a spark!  An energy of compassion, openness, non-judgment and playfulness will support this learning experience.

Gelli Print Making

Gelatin printing is a form of monoprinting in which a gelatin slab is used as a printing plate in with standard water-soluble printing inks and textured objects to create images. Very little pressure is required to make monoprints using this technique. It creates an impressive image as different layers are added.  

You will be introduced to various designs and layering techniques to create your own distinct pieces. These prints can then be used in a variety of ways like card making, book covers, t-shirts and quilt blocks. You can expect to make multiple prints to take home.

Folk Art Painting

A one-day adventure into the world of folk art. Beginners will learn some basic painting skills and more experienced painters will learn the art of keeping it simple. Everyone will enjoy the painting in the style of folk art. You will work on a composite board and there will be a choice of several folk art images. A beautiful painting, suitable for framing will be the result.

Make a Hat or Mittens using Wet Felting

In this three and a half hour workshop, you will learn the process of wet felting. Using merino wools and decorative fibres (raw silk, bamboo, banana viscose, hemp and linen), you will create your own hat or mittens. This course will cover the process of wet felting, art touches, building templates for 3D felted objects and introducing multi-layering techniques and effects to your product. During this workshop, you will complete one project (a hat or mittens) and begin a second project with instructions to finish at home.

Introduction to Digital SLR Photography

Digital SLR Camera and manual

Learn how to get the most out of your Digital SLR camera. With this 6-hour course spread over three evenings, you will learn how to maximize the potential of your camera and become a better photographer. This course will cover: camera set-up; digital basics (resolution, picture file formats, colour); understanding exposure; how to combine shutter speed and aperture to capture motion and manipulate depth of field; lenses and how to use them effectively; basic flash photography; accessories for your camera and camera care; field tips and techniques for nature and landscape photography; composition; lighting. Session 2 and 3 will include some hands-on activities designed to improve your photography skills. The course will also include a booklet that summarizes all the information covered.

Andy Zeltkalns is a member of Muskoka Arts & Crafts and an avid nature and landscape photographer who has been involved in photography for over 40 years. As a freelance photographer, he has been published in a variety of magazines such as, Unique Muskoka, Dockside, Canadian Geographic, Canoeroots, and Sports Illustrated

Introduction to Basket Weaving

A time-honoured tradition, this course uses traditional techniques to weave reed into a beautiful and functional bread basket. Instructor Lynn Kennedy has years of experience and will impart wisdom to the participant about uses of wood and reeds in baskets. The participants will follow instructions to build a rectangular bread basket. Basic weaving techniques will be taught and hand dyed coloured reed can also be incorporated for a personalized look.

Quiltscaping

Take some fabric scraps and turn them into a beautiful landscape quilt. In this one-day workshop, the  instructors will walk you through the design and sewing process of creating a quilted landscape. You will first design a scene and then select fabrics to carry out the construction of a landscape using a quilt as-you-go technique. You will be introduced to simple quilting techniques and finally how to bind and finish your quilted work of art. No prior sewing skills are required. This is a great project for beginners interested in sewing or quilting. You can expect to make a placemat sized piece.
