His paintings explore the ephemeral and transitory nature of his surroundings, while also connecting the landscape to a sense of personal nostalgia. Drawn to timeless subject matter that exists beyond contemporary trends and artifice, Sternberg searches for the emptiness and quiet that inhabit the soul of the North. He finds almost human qualities in the simplest elements of the landscape, using places such as desolate train stations as stages for exploring themes of spirituality, alienation, repression, and solitude.
