When we encounter a piece of art, we often find ourselves asking: What inspired it? What experiences, influences, and moments shaped its creation? Every work of art has a story behind it—whether it reflects something deeply personal, captures a local narrative, or responds to an issue that shapes our society.
Art Journeys is a series dedicated to uncovering those stories. Through conversations with artists, community members, and local leaders, I will explore a simple yet important question: Why does art matter?
Together, we'll discover how the people, landscapes, and perspectives of Muskoka inspire creative expression. More than a celebration of art, Art Journeys is an exploration of the connections between creativity, community, and the human experience. Along the way, we'll uncover not only how art is made, but why it continues to resonate with us.
Before we begin, let me introduce myself. My name is Alex Goltz, and I'll be your guide on this journey through Muskoka's arts community. My family has called the Muskoka Lakes area home for six generations, and that deep connection to this place has shaped who I am.
I recently graduated from Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School and will be attending Carleton University this fall to study Journalism and Humanities. This summer, I am working at Muskoka Arts & Crafts as the Assistant Art Gallery Administrator at the new Windermere gallery located in the Village Hall. The opportunity has allowed me to reconnect with my roots while discovering the stories, history, and creativity that make this community so unique.
Ever since I can remember, I was described as an artist. I was always drawing, crafting, dancing, and finding new ways to express myself. When I discovered journalism, I realized storytelling was the art form that I truly blossomed in. Through my writing, I hope to share the same sense of wonder and inspiration that art brings to all of us.
Whether you're curious about the creative process, interested in meeting local artists, or simply want to stay connected to Muskoka's vibrant arts scene, I invite you to follow along. Art Journeys is a place to explore, learn, and connect with the arts close to home.
We have exciting adventures coming up very soon that dive into the lives of Muskoka. I won’t give too much away and spoil the surprise, but I can guarantee from what I have heard that Muskoka is a place of creation and discovery unlike any other in every aspect of art. And that art is the foundation of our society.
