MUSKOKA ARTS & CRAFTS ANNUAL SUMMER SHOW

Just months after the idea was floated, the first Summer Show took place on August 16 and 17, 1963, in downtown Bracebridge’s Memorial Park. Artists were invited to submit their handmade work, paying a small entry fee of just one dollar. Initially there was almost no interest — only a single application had been received two weeks prior. Undeterred, the organizing committee continued their outreach, and by showtime about 50 artists had registered. On those two days, an estimated 3,000 people came to see — marking a surprisingly strong and enthusiastic response from the community. 

Within roughly a decade, the popularity of the Summer Show had outgrown the original venue. By the early 1970s, organizers recognized the need for a larger, more suitable space to accommodate increasing numbers of artists and visitors. As a result, the Show was relocated to Annie Williams Memorial Park in Bracebridge — a location that continues to host the event today. This move helped the Show expand in size, scope, and ambition.

Over the years, what began as a modest local craft sale blossomed into one of the oldest—and most cherished—rural outdoor arts festivals in Ontario. The organization welcomed a diverse mix of full-time artists, part-time makers, hobbyists, and patrons, fostering a vibrant creative community. As the festival evolved, the Summer Show expanded beyond crafts to include fine arts, contemporary design, interactive demonstrations, and much more — reflecting the evolving tastes and talents of the region.
