Collection: Martha Davis

My dance background is a huge part of my life and my art. As I paint I often wave my hands around like a conductor to imitate the feel of what I'm after. I tend to see shapes (like rocks and leaves) and lines as rounded or wavy, overlapping one another often in transparency. I find myself being more attracted recently to abstraction, although my brush seems to lend itself more to impressionism -a semblance of familiarity with a goal of an off-beat design. I want drama, movement and originality. The palette knife is my most exciting tool, followed by the index finger on pastel and charcoal. But as a warm up sketch to the final drawing, I love very loosely and quickly drawing with a thin ink pen on paper. The Group of Seven, Tom Thomson and Emily Carr are the most appealing for their raw brush strokes.
