The Art of Play

This photograph of a playful red fox was taken nearby its den. When this particular fox emerged from its afternoon nap, it approached me and began playfully chewing this stick only a few feet from me. Playing is a vital part of young kits' physical, social, and cognitive development - much like it is for human children. It also teaches young foxes the skills that are necessary for their survival alone in the wild once they've left the den.
